OTTAWA PLAYING HOST TO THE 2010 NATIONAL ABORIGINAL HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The best Aboriginal Midget hockey players from across Canada converge on Ottawa to compete for hockey supremacy week of May 2nd-8th
OTTAWA, ON – April 7, 2010 – The Aboriginal Sport Circle is pleased to announce that it will be hosting the upcoming 2010 National Aboriginal Hockey Championship (NAHC) at the Bell Sensplex in Ottawa. In its 9th year, this prestigious event will feature eighteen teams (male and female) and highlight the top (15-17 year olds) Aboriginal players in Canada. It will definitely showcase elite talent from all over the country – teams from as far as Nunavut, Northwest Territories, Alberta, Saskatchewan and the Maritimes will join Ontario and Quebec to compete on this National stage.
Marilee Nowgesic, Executive Director of the Aboriginal Sport Circle is excited about the week-long event, “Our Host Organizing Committee (HOC) has done an outstanding job in putting this all together and has planned a memorable week for these young men and women.” The Championship has organized educational workshops for these young Aboriginal athletes and will touch on numerous subjects where experts will speak about health and wellness, drugs and alcohol which are some of the challenges facing Aboriginal youth. Nowgesic adds, “It’s not just about hockey, this is an opportunity to educate these young men and women who will become role models for their own community.” She continues, “We’re just hoping to make a difference both on and off the ice and create an awesome life experience.”
On the hockey front, the Championship exposes outstanding Aboriginal talent which can catapult some onto bigger stages. Most recently, Jamie Lee Rattray (Ottawa) led Team Canada to Gold in the World U-18 Women’s Tournament in Chicago. Rattray will compete for Ontario South in this year’s Championship and compete against her Canadian teammate Brigette Lacquette playing for Manitoba. Of course Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price and Nashville Predator forward Jordin Tootoo are just two current Aboriginal stars playing in the NHL. Price, who along with Ottawa Police Chief Vern White are the NAHC Honorary Co-Chairs. Price acknowledges the importance of the Championship, “I’m proud to be part of this event, this is a great opportunity for these boys and girls to compete at a high level and possibly get seen by Junior and NHL scouts.” The action on the ice begins Sunday,
May 2nd and the official Opening Ceremonies will take place at 4:15pm (Mattamy Ice pad) which will include many dignitaries from the world of hockey and government as well will feature some Aboriginal traditions. The Championship round-robin will take place from May 2nd-8th with Championship Day (Bronze and Gold games – Male and Female) taking place on Saturday, May 8th.
